Affiliate Disclosure

How we keep KnowTheCost free
KnowTheCost.co.uk is a free site that helps UK households understand the true cost of everyday financial decisions. Building, maintaining and updating 180+ calculators each tax year takes time and money, and we don't run intrusive ads or charge for any tool.
Instead, a small number of pages contain affiliate links to third-party providers whose products we'd genuinely consider using ourselves. If you click one of those links and go on to sign up or buy something, the provider may pay us a small commission. You pay exactly the same price either way — there is no markup passed on to you.
How affiliate links are marked
Every affiliate link on this site is:
- Visibly labelled in context (typically inside a distinct, primary-coloured card)
- Tagged with
rel="sponsored"so search engines and assistive tech can identify it - Accompanied by a short disclosure paragraph at the bottom of the page that links back to this policy
Which providers we currently work with
Our active affiliate relationships are with a small, hand-picked list of UK providers, including (but not limited to):
- Emma — personal finance / budgeting app
- Make a Will Online — online will writing
- Safestore — UK self-storage
- Interparcel — courier price comparison
- Virgin Media — broadband
This list changes over time. We add and remove partners based purely on whether the product is something we'd recommend on its merits.
Editorial independence
Affiliate revenue does not influence our calculator logic, the figures we show, the order in which we present results, or the guidance we give. The numbers in every calculator are based on the latest published HMRC, DWP, Ofgem, Ofwat and ONS data for the 2026/27 tax year.
If a provider stops being a sensible recommendation, we remove the link — even if it costs us revenue.
Compliance
This disclosure is provided in line with the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) and Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) guidance on affiliate marketing, and the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) endorsement guides.
