Fuel cost calculator UK
Enter your journey distance, measured fuel economy and pump price. Add a return trip or split the fuel bill between travellers.
Calculate your journey’s petrol or diesel cost
142p/L and 40 UK MPG are editable examples, not live national prices. Use your pump price and measured economy. Petrol and diesel use the same litres × price calculation. US MPG uses a different gallon.

Projections assume 5 journeys every week for 52 weeks at unchanged price and efficiency. Monthly is annual ÷ 12. Fuel only: parking, tolls, insurance, tax, servicing and depreciation are additional.
A hypothetical 10p/L increase adds £0.34 per journey. A 10% MPG improvement reduces annual fuel spend by £114.44.
How to calculate fuel cost
For UK MPG: litres used = miles ÷ MPG × 4.54609. Cost in pounds = litres × pump price in pence ÷ 100. For L/100km: litres used = kilometres × L/100km ÷ 100. Double a one-way distance only when you need the return trip.
Worked example: 100 miles
Using an illustrative 40 UK MPG and 142p/L, a 100-mile journey uses 11.37 litres and costs £16.14. Two people sharing that fuel bill would pay £8.07 each. These are example inputs, not a current price forecast.
Choose useful inputs
Use a recent measured MPG that represents the route, load and conditions. Across several fill-ups, MPG = miles driven ÷ litres refilled × 4.54609. Manufacturer test figures and trip computer readings may differ from actual consumption. Repeat the calculation at several pump prices to see the effect on your budget.
Units: official imperial gallon definition. For work travel, use the mileage claim calculator; a fuel cost is not itself the amount of tax relief.
