Broadband social tariffs: could you pay less?

Compare selected broadband social tariffs, benefit eligibility and switching costs, with annual savings examples and official application links.

    Quick answer

If you receive a qualifying benefit, a broadband social tariff could reduce your bill. Check your address, the benefit rules and the contract holder’s name. Compare the complete cost, including any old-contract exit fee and replacement phone or TV services. A lower advertised monthly price is not automatically the largest saving.

    Who can qualify?

Universal Credit and Pension Credit are common qualifying benefits. Providers can accept different benefits and different benefit components. The person receiving the qualifying benefit generally needs to be the main contract holder. Check the exact provider rules rather than assuming that low income or retirement alone qualifies.

BT lists Universal Credit, Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, Employment and Support Allowance, Jobseeker’s Allowance and Income Support. Its No Income plan has additional conditions. BT says new customers may face a credit check and security deposit; existing customers switching to Home Essentials do not face that credit check.

    Selected packages and annual cost

These packages are not interchangeable: speed, network coverage and eligibility matter. Virgin Media lists qualifying benefits including Universal Credit and Pension Credit. Hyperoptic also lists benefits such as PIP and Attendance Allowance, but only offers Fair Fibre at qualifying properties.

BT’s provider page confirms Home Essentials starts at £16.50, with extra No Income conditions. Its faster tiers are not priced here because the checked provider page did not expose their complete prices. Confirm the quote directly.

An important Virgin Media eligibility restriction

Virgin’s Essential terms exclude applicants currently in arrears or on a scheduled repayment plan. If this affects you, ask about other support rather than assuming a tariff switch will be accepted.

    What could the saving be?

Start with the price you actually pay. An illustrative £35 monthly bill costs £420 over 12 months. Moving to £13 costs £156 and saves £264 before switching costs. Moving to £20 costs £240 and saves £180. These figures do not describe an average customer or guaranteed saving.

If the £13 option also required a hypothetical £90 old-contract exit payment and £24 of replacement services over the year, the first-year saving would be £420 − £156 − £90 − £24 = £150. Keep refundable deposits separate from permanent fees, but allow for their upfront cash cost.

    Switching without an unexpected bill

Ofcom says you can move to your existing provider’s social tariff free of charge. Moving to another company is different: ask whether the current provider will waive its exit charge and get the answer in writing. Social tariffs have no mid-contract price rises and no early-exit fee for leaving the social tariff itself.

Virgin’s Essential plans have free broadband setup and rolling 30-day terms. Hyperoptic advertises free installation and activation with 30 days’ notice. Check phone calls, TV, equipment returns and future eligibility reviews separately. A bundle you stop receiving can create a new cost elsewhere.

How to apply and compare your quote

Use the official provider links below to check your address and benefit. Ask for a written summary before ordering. A useful comparison records the monthly price, any scheduled changes, setup fee, old-contract exit quote, required notice and the cost of services you would lose.

For a longer contract or a quote with scheduled increases, use the broadband cost calculator. Compare both offers over the same period. If no social tariff is available, Ofcom also recommends checking ordinary deals and asking your current provider for a better price.

    • Check the benefit recipient and proposed account holder.
    • Check the actual address and required speed.
    • Confirm old-contract charges before authorising a switch.
    • Keep the order summary and eligibility-review date.
