    Cherished number plates explained

A cherished or personalised plate is a registration with personal appeal. Buying one gives a right to assign the number under DVLA rules, not unrestricted ownership of a registration.

    Registration rights and physical plates

The registration right and the manufactured plates fitted to a car are different things. A V750 certificate or V778 retention document records entitlement or retention; assignment to a vehicle follows DVLA rules. Physical plates must use the prescribed characters and spacing and be made by an appropriate registered supplier.

    Which formats can be personalised?

Common formats include current style (AB12 CDE), prefix (A123 ABC), suffix (ABC 123A) and dateless combinations such as A 1 or 1 ABC. Name-like and initials plates are descriptions of buyer appeal, not separate legal registration formats. Two characters means one letter plus one digit; AB 1 has three characters excluding its space.

    Vehicle age and assignment

An age-related registration cannot make a vehicle appear newer than it is. Dateless appearance does not itself prove that a number is transferable or available. Check the exact registration and vehicle with DVLA. Our tool recognises supported structures and does not query an issued-registration database.

    What determines value?

Compare similar completed sales, current offers and the exact fees. Asking prices and exceptional reported sales do not establish a typical range. A registration meaningful to one owner may have few interested buyers. This site does not promise investment growth, a quick sale or a fixed percentage premium for a format.

    Budget beyond the purchase price

Check whether the quote includes VAT, applicable assignment rights or fees, dealer commission and the cost of physical plates. Taking a registration off a vehicle costs £80; subsequent assignment using paid retention is free. Renewal of an unused V750/V778 right is free and valid for a further 10 years when completed in time. Confirm terms before paying.

    Compare number plate formats

Format helps choose comparable sales; it does not set a fixed price. Examples illustrate structure and are not availability checks.

How to value a private number plate

Compare the same format, length, initials or name and number pattern. Keep achieved prices separate from advertised asking prices. An unsold dealer listing is not evidence of what a buyer will pay. Request several written quotes and compare the amount you would receive after commission, fees and VAT.

Is this a DVLA number plate valuation?

No. KnowTheCost is independent of DVLA. DVLA sells registration rights through its own service and auctions; those purchase prices do not establish the resale value of your existing registration. You cannot submit your own plate to DVLA's sales auction through this calculator.

Check the right to sell and assign

A personalised registration is a right to assign a number, subject to DVLA rules. Check your V750 or V778 and vehicle eligibility. You cannot use a registration that makes a vehicle appear newer, or transfer a Q/QNI registration. Do not change spacing to make a name read differently on the physical plate.

Taking a number off a vehicle costs £80. A retention document is valid for 10 years; assignment using that paid retention is free. Check the official procedure before accepting payment.
